Happiness in a Bottle…

I have become addicted to something delicious… Taste Nirvana’s Real Coconut Water! I think everyone has heard that coconut water is good for you, everyone should be drinking it, add it to smoothies, etc. But have you ever tried it?  Did you like it? I can tell you that I didn’t!  I wanted to like it. I wanted to be healthier. I wanted to feel great, but I didn’t.  I thought maybe it was just me so I continually bought different brands of coconut water and tried them.  I tried them chilled. I tried them at room temperature. I tried them in smoothies and still no luck – GROSS.

Then a silly thing happened: I saw an Instagram post (love Instagram) where someone posted a picture of a Taste Nirvana Real Coconut Water bottle.  The woman was drinking it with her young daughter and basically wrote the same feelings I just shared with you above. The only difference in our story is that she is a yoga instructor, in great shape, and I like to just sit around in yoga pants ;)  All kidding aside, two days later I wandered into a Whole Foods supermarket and as I strolled through the produce department, I saw the coconut water she had posted.  I was so excited to find it without even looking for it! I was super excited to see the packaging because it comes in beautiful recycled glass bottles that I am now washing and saving for some future DIY project!

I think you can probably figure out that I absolutely loved the coconut water so much that I felt compelled to write this post! To me it tastes like it has almost an almond flavoring, but with a really smooth finish.  I bought the plain coconut water without pulp but Taste Nirvana offers several varieties.  I have been buying it at Whole Foods but I just found out that Amazon sells it as well… can you say Amazon Prime???

What is coconut water?

Coconut water is the clear liquid found inside a young, green coconut.  Young coconuts are harvested at 6 months of age, to obtain the most water. The greatest health benefits of coconut water comes from drinking the water of the young coconut, not the mature coconut milk, which is generally lower in nutrients. Many athletes are drinking coconut water due to its high electrolyte content and referring to it as “nature’s sports drink”.

Coconut Water Nutrition Facts

The liquid inside the coconut contains approximately 50 calories per cup, 10 grams of natural sugar, a small amount of sodium and it is fat free! The real nutritional benefit comes from the fact that coconut water contains approximately 600 mg of potassium, making it a high electrolyte beverage. Electrolytes are critical to maintain blood volume, heart health, and well as to prevent dehydration. Maintaining electrolyte levels can help reduce fatigue, stress, and help maintain muscle relaxation.

Other health benefits of coconut water include:

  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Lowered cholesterol
  • Weight loss
  • Boosted energy
  • Reduced cellulite
